Makeup | The Classic Red Lip

With the holiday party season in full swing, there’s nothing quite like a glamorous red lip to get you in a jolly mood. Although it may look like a simple makeup look to achieve, like a slick cat eye or perfectly blended contour, the classic red lip requires time, dedication and skill – it isn’t exactly low maintenance.

To help you master the art of the perfect red pout – and making it last until the party’s over – I have put together this 5 step tutorial detailing everything that you need to know, in order to wear red lipstick like a pro.

Step 1 – Prepping your lips beforehand is key for this look as there’s nothing worse than a patchy red lip, with a visible layer of dry skin! You can find specific products to exfoliate your lips (I love this lip scrub by LUSH!) or you can DIY it by using a toothbrush instead. Rinse the brush under a warm tap and gently brush your lips in circular strokes to exfoliate away any dead skin.
Once your lips are clean, apply a hydrating lip balm and leave this to penetrate the skin for a minimum of 3-5 mins. Use a q-tip to wipe away any excess product to avoid the lipstick from sliding off upon application. Your lips are now ready and primed for lipstick!

Step 2 – Using a beauty blender, dab a very thin layer of your normal everyday foundation over your bare lips. This will create the perfect canvas for a colour to be applied on top as it will help accentuate the red hues of the lipstick.

Step 3 – With a lip liner in a similar shade to your lipstick of choice, draw an ‘X’ on your cupids bow and trace the natural outline of your lips. Using the same pencil, colour the inside of the lip line.
Now grab your favourite red lipstick and apply colour over the top. Blot your lips with a piece of tissue paper to help remove any excess pigment and apply a second coating of lipstick. This ensures that the colour is pressed and locked in for the rest of the day.

Tip: Dab a brighter shade of red lipstick on the centre of your lips to create the illusion of fuller and plumper lips!

Step 4 – To keep the lips clean and crisp, grab your normal day-to-day concealer and using a small brush, line the edges of your lips. The concealer will also act as a barrier to prevent your lipstick from bleeding throughout the day!

Step 5 – Finish off the lips with a light dusting of translucent powder to set the colour and to help keep that red lip picture perfect all day.

And there you have it: the perfect, classic, sexy red lip in just five very simple steps! Not only is this look bold and fierce, but it will also last you the whole night without rubbing off, perfect for all your mistletoe encounters!
